Letter to Students and Families:
We will be focusing on how we can integrate environmental practices into our local area, including urban agriculture, green architecture, permaculture, and greening industry.
We request that each student have a bike (and helmet) to use for our very local field trips around town. A practice ride is scheduled on Tuesday. The bike may be locked on campus for the week.
We will have some reading during the week based on Permaculture studies.
The reading will include the following short book:
Permaculture in a Nutshell by Patrick Whitefield, approx. 80 pages in length.
Our schedule for the week will be as follows:
Monday, April 23:
Orientation.
Introduction to agriculture design and layout, planting rotations, soil studies, urban and rural agriculture and Biodynamics.
Hands-on Work in the garden.
History of Agriculture at 1 PM
Tuesday, April 24:
Permaculture ethics and principles
Hands-on work in the garden.
Practice bike ride around the neighborhood.
Wednesday, April 25:
Hidden Villa: 9 AM to 3:30 PM
Morning: work on the farm
Afternoon: naturalist led hike in the open space
Thursday, April 26:
Hands-on garden work.
Tools: history, use and care
Bike field trip to unique green house construction site in Old Town Mountain view, designed by Forrest Linebarger. Tour at 1PM
Friday, April 27:
Hands-on garden work
Bike field trip to Google campus: focus on greening industry and environmental responsibility. 11AM tour
Assignments:
1. Read Permaculture in a Nutshell by Patrick Whitefield.
Due Thursday, 4/26
2. Write 1-3 page summary of what you learned.
Leading questions provided on Friday, 4/27.
Due by end of the day. 4/27.
3. Thank you letters to field trip hosts.
Due Friday, 4/27 (possible extension till Monday, 4/30)
4. Garden design drawings and research notes from class work.
